Collect the Whole Set: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Phew... this one was a doozy! Lots and lots of time and detail was spent on this one. A friend of mine commissioned me to create a piece just like my "Collect the Whole Set: Pulp Fiction" from the Gallery 1988 show; Crazy 4 Cult. Only instead of Pulp Fiction but using Indiana Jones & Raiders of the Lost Ark as the subject matter. I think the toughest part was filling in all of the text for the Checklists and info on the back of cards. If you look carefully, you'll see that it is all entirely accurate. I will be making prints out of this one for sure, if anyone is interested. Again... phew! I wish i didn't have a day job and i would just create pieces like this for all of my favorite movies.

Well after trying to get my designs made into t-shirts through many different avenues I've decided to put things into my own hands. I have put these 2 designs up for sale over at RedBubble.com so you can purchase them wherever and whenever you want. They are a little more money then the "1 shirt / 1 day" site but this seems to be the only alternative. I have never seen or purchased any items off of Red Bubble but I've heard good things. After popular demand i've posted a larger version to see all of the detail. Plus i also revised the image slightly. After looking it over i realized that Indy himself was A)either too small or B) his hat, jacket and satchel were too big. So i made him bigger so that his clothes would actually fit him. Or i could've just left it as is and just chalked it up to the idea of old people shrink...

I was recently commissioned to created a companion piece to "The Glory Days: Captain America" but this time using Indiana Jones as the subject. This was probably the most fun I've had on a drawing in a long time. It was really satisfying and i am really proud of how it came out. Lots and lots of relics, statues and easter eggs from the Indy universe as well as one other, can you name them all?

I had to wait a little bit to post this baby because it was actually a birthday gift for my lovely wife! We both love Disney World and all of the retro goodness it has within it's magical walls. This is based on the super old school attraction called Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. Its chock full of charismatic singing birds, tiki gods & more. You can probably see the whole attraction on YouTube if you do a search. Now this actually started out as an idea for just the birthday card but i liked how it was coming out so much that i created a large poster out it too! So she has a neato card and poster!

I might put out a print of the poster if there is enough interest...

Well, i've waited long enough... let your peepers eye ball my doodle for the Gallery 1988 show; "Please Post Bills". I call this one "Bill-O-Rama"! It started with the idea to feature Ernie McCraken from Kingpin and somehow feature a lot of Bill's other classic characters and then it kinda grew from there. I think Bob Wiley from "What About Bob?" and his cameo from "Zombieland" turned out the best. Which are your favorites?

If you guys are interested in purchasing one of these beauties they will be on sale starting Nov. 4th at Gallery 1988 (Melrose) at the opening reception. The gallery will post the remaining prints on their online shop a few days after the show opens. Check out Gallery 1998's site for further details about the sale. Sorry for the lack of updates recently, i just have been pretty busy with freelance stuff. I haven't posted most of it because I either am not aloud to post it or it really just isn't suitable for posting on the site. But as some of you may have noticed if you are following me on Twitter or on Facebook is that I am posting small snapshots of a new piece that i have been working on. Well as I am sure some you have guessed it, it is a doodle based on the many characters of Bill Murray. Stark Industries

Last night i saw the new Captain America movie for the second time and aside from just generally really liking it, one of my favorite aspects of it was that it was a period piece. And from one of my favorite periods i might add (actually, it's really anything from the roaring 20's to the mid to late 60's that i love) so there was a lot of attention to detail in this movie. I especially loved the Stark Expo / World's Fair vibe and all that 'World of Tomorrow' stuff. And something that i really took notice of the second time around was the Stark Industries logo from the 1940's. I knew that the minute i got home from the theater i had to recreate it and turn it into a t-shirt design. I could see it so vividly in my head, a extra soft gray t-shirt with a distressed 1 color logo on it with a catchy tagline. And a with a couple hours of work... poof! Here it is... let me know what you guys think! I wanna make this into a shirt but i want it on the right kind and for the right price. I'll probably also submit it to some of those one a day sites too as a test.

This has to be my favorite show I've ever done for Gallery 1988 as Pee Wee is pretty much my favorite person ever! I watched the show, saw the movies, had the toys and most recently I got to see him do Pee Wees Playhouse on Broadway in NYC! Amazing, he really hasn't lost a step. So when i was asked to contribute some art to this show I had a really hard time figuring out what i wanted to do because i love everything he does! In the end I choose a scene from Pee Wees Big Adventure that had my 2 favorite things, Pee Wee and Dinosaurs! This piece was created specifically for a fellow named Shannon Richter. It is based on the line from Total Recall, "See you at the party Richter!", only his friend put's his name in it and he thought it would make a great birthday gift. I for one, totally agree. I added Richter's blooding arm stumps and some hints of the elevator and the Red Planet's terrain. I hope Shannon like this!

Birthday Card Commission

I was recently commissioned to create a birthday card for a little girl's 1st birthday party! After multiple revisions and my lovely wife's help, the card now makes sense. In the original layout the card was supposed to read (and in my head it did...) "Happy 1st Birthday Party.", "You're Invited!", and then the little girl's name, "Finley Bell". But what it actually ended up saying (because I don't think too far ahead) was "Happy Birthday Party 1st Your Invited Finley Bell" which doesn't really make too much sense. So now it reads "You're Invited to Finley Bell's 1st Birthday Party"... much better! Thanks for being a nice wife and an even better editor, Kim!

So you can imagine how hard it was to pick just one for my piece for the Gallery 1988 (Venice, CA) show: "CAMP FIREWOOD" Celebrating the 10th anniversary of WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER. The show opens tonight at 7pm at the newly opened Gallery 1988 in Venice, CA (they have 2 gallery spaces and the other is in LA). If you can make it out there i would highly recommend it as it will be hosted by the film's director and co-writer; David Wain! Turtle Power!

Here is my entry in the the ASOP Show: Shell Shock. I call it Turtle Power and it will be on display out Brave New Worlds comic shop in Philly starting Friday, June 3rd (6pm - 9pm) until the end of the month. I had a lot of fun going back and seeing all the characters (and toys) i used to have and sadly don't anymore. It was really hard choosing which characters to put in and which i had to ultimately leave out. And it was also hard creating this piece because apparently my computer couldn't handle the raw Turtle Power (or the absurd amount of objects and line work). Which brings me to my next point children... when is someone going to invent a computer that never needs upgrading and is always fast? Come on scientists, make it happen!

I have been really, really busy lately doing lots fun doodles. But there is a payoff in here somewhere... First off is another show at the amazing Gallery 1988 called Camp Firewood: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Wet Hot American Summer.
Gallery1988: Venice will open "Camp Firewood: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Wet Hot American Summer," with 60 artists paying tribute to the classic cult comedy. If you've never seen Wet Hot American Summer, you are seriously missing out. Since it's release in 2001, it's paicked up quite an audience, and the stars of the movie have picked up some extremely successful careers (Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Jimmy Fallon head writer AD Miles, Amy Poehler, Joe Lo Truglio, Judah Friedlander). Created by the brains behind the MTV sketch show "The State," this movie is an absurd spoof of the 1980's sleepover camp (Meatballs-esque) comedy. You can check out the trailer by CLICKING HERE. And we're insanely privileged to have the movie's director and co-writer, David Wain, to host the art show! DREAMS DO COME TRUE. AND, we'll be producing a screening, along with the Q&A podcast with Jeff Goldsmith, but we'll have more details on that later. If you haven't seen the movie, it was currently added to Netflix streaming, so you have no excise now. (p.s. it's NSFW). Then come celebrate the movie's anniversary with us at G1988: Venice on June 10th, from 7-10 PM.

Man, i just can't stop churning these babies out! The 4th and latest piece in the Arnold One Liner series is none other then probably his most famous role as the Terminator! I did a poll of what line i should use between "Come with me if you want to live.", "I'll be back." and "Hasta la vista baby" and let's just say the the one i went with won... by a lot.

I decided to revise the piece a little for 2 reasons. First, i completely forgot to put in Arnold's patented gap on his 2 front teeth... doh! And second, i felt the character as a whole was too small and needed to be made larger to see all the detail. The character is just as important as the catch phrase so i wanted them to be more equal and fill up the space more. Thoughts?

Animals Are People Too... Key Chains!

I've really had a lot of fun making these new animal drawings. So much that I've decided to make some key chains out of them. I just got them in the mail and spent this weekend attaching these little metal key chain hoops on them (and my fingers hurt now) and i have to say... they came out awesome! They are 1.5" big and made on 1/16" thick black acrylic (hard plastic). I will be selling these beauties at upcoming comic conventions. However, if you won't be at any of the upcoming conventions and you are interested in getting 1 (or 4!) just send me an email and I'm sure we can work something out. What do you guys think?

And for the new season i created this new vinyl banner! If you guys have ever seen me at the shows, i have had this banner but i thought it was time for a change! I created this new one based on my overall site redesign, business cards, etc... What do you guys think?

This convention season i will be starting off with a new show for me; Boston Comic Con | April 30 - May 1 and i hear it's supposed to be a good one so check it out if your in the neighborhood. Next up will be Wizard World Philly | June 17 - June 19. And then it's on to my favorite show... Baltimore Comic Con | Aug 20 - Aug 21! Check it out ghouls and gals! Do you love New Jersey? I know I do! Well here is a design i created exclusively for therethere.com. What's therethere.com? Well glad you asked... They are an online t-shirt store that partners with artists from around the country to create designs based on different cities and states. Or as I have been describing it, "You'll 'get' these t-shirts if your from the city or state..." t-shirt site. For some shirts, 10% of sales will be earmarked for a specific nonprofit. For all "city" shirts, 10% of sales will go to an organization doing work in that specific city. That way, when you buy a shirt to represent your home, the benefits go right back to where you live.

I was the first to get a crack at the Garden State which made me very excited. The idea behind the design was simple. Michael Jackson Captain EO Cartoon Print

There are 2 kinds of people in this world... those who know what Captain EO is and those who don't. I can proudly say I am on the side of those who know what he is. I'll give ya a little back story... A long time ago in a time known as the 1980's, Disney, Michael Jackson & Francis Ford Coppola made a (super cheesey) 3D action movie / attraction for the Disney Parks. It was basically a sci-fi space adventure about Captain EO saving the (or changing) the world with music... in 3D! And it also starred Angelica Houston too. Well i never saw it when it was in the parks originally back in the 80's but they recently re-released it in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World and i did have a chance to see it for the first time recently. My wife; Kim absolutely loves MJ and needless to say was very excited to see this again on the big screen (you can check it out on the little YouTube screen here: Part 1 & Part 2). So for Valentine's Day this year i created this doodle for her. Notice MJ's skin color there, so you know it must've been old. So, do you guys remember Captain EO?

Back to the Future Flux Capacitor Cartoon Print

A while ago I was commissioned to create a hand drawn Back to the Future piece. It is one of my favorite pieces that I've ever done. I'm always a little tentative & intimidated by coloring things by hand, probably because I've become so reliant on the magical computer machine. However, I was extremely proud of the colors for this one piece but I always thought I could do it better. So I did (at least i think so). What do you guys think?

On a side note... I'm actually working on another BTTF commission piece. It is actually for the same guy who I did this original one for. It is actually going to be similar to the cereal box pieces I did for the Goonies, Ghostbusters & Gremlins but just with Back to the Future instead! It's gonna be awesome!

I was recently asked to participate in another (AMAZING) show at Gallery 1988 in LA. This time around i was asked to create a new original piece based on one of my favorite comedians of the 80's. I can't tell you who it is (yet) nor display it on the web (yet) but i can tell you i think it is one of my best yet! As the show gets closer i can reveal more info but for now i can just give you some info about the show. The show will be opening on Friday, Jan. 7th at Gallery 1988 in LA, 7pm - 11pm. Check out the G88 website for more info as the date gets closer. The show is being presented by Funny or Die and hosted by Chris Kurumada and Michael Rapaport. Additionally, will also being premiering pieces up until the show opens on their website as well so keep checking for cool new artwork. On a side note, I will actually be flying out to LA for the show opening so if your in the neighborhood come stop by and say hello! My piece along with +100 others will be on sale and it will prolly be a mad house! And apparently there maybe some cool suprise guests at the show. So I have been super busy recently. Between going to Hawaii for 2 weeks for my Honeymoon and having tons of freelance on my plate posting has been real scarce... The latest in the series; Animals Are People Too. This one was actually started as a hand drawn commission at a comic convention but i liked it so much i needed to make a print out of it! I call this one Loungin' Land Dweller because he is a tortoise and according to Wikipedia "American English tends to use the word 'tortoise' for land-dwelling species" and Wikipedia is never wrong. This guy is based on Superfan's tortoise; Daryl. Which by the way, he didn't have a name so i decided to name him Daryl and apparently it stuck! What do you guys think? Like it? Love it? Don't care?

Rat Race

Here is the 2nd of my new series of Mini Animal prints. This one is called Rat Race. The reasoning behind the title is fairly obvious... It's my version of one of them new hip big city yuppies with his skinny tie, Bluetooth headset (so you can't tell if he's talking to you, someone on the other line, or just rambling on to no one in particular...), his freshly made caramel macchiato and thinking about buying and selling fancy cheeses all before I've had my Captain Crunch for breakfast! What a dirty rat...

Thanks to a good friend i made one minor but important change. I flipped the 'stock exchange' arrow to read left to right, it makes much more sense since we read left to right too. thanks buddy.

The Goonies: Part of This Complete Breakfast

The 1st of 3 new pieces I have done for what I have dubbed the 3G Show. This show will be held at Gallery 1988 in LA and has work from friends like Dave Perillo, Tom Whalen and Scott Derby. The theme of the show is basically the tri-fecta of awesome 80's movies; The Goonies, Ghostbusters & Gremlins. The only 'rule' for the show was to create 3 separate pieces for each of the 3 movies. I decided to create retro faux cereal boxes for each of the 3 movies, (And yes, I am aware that all 3 of these movies had fun breakfast cereal tie-ins already, some with multiple ones... I'm looking at you Ghosbusters...) each with there own spin on it. One new technique I tried on all of them was photographing real cereal and then photoshopping them onto the boxes 'cause i thought that would be cool. Can anyone guess what I used for this cereal? I'll give you a hint... it's 2 different cereals. Give up!? I used Fruity Pebbles and Count Chocula marshmallows (photoshopped gold to look like doubloons). This was also awesome because I love cereal so it gave me an excuse to buy more then just my normal 1 box per food shopping trip! Each of these pieces will be available for purchase once the show opens on September 3rd at the actual gallery in LA or through their website. There will be 2 versions of each of the 3 pieces. There will be a (2) 12" x 12" signed giclee stretched canvas prints of each piece for 100 beans as well at (15) 12" x 12" signed giclee watercolor paper prints for 50 beans. I will post the other 2 pieces later on to keep the suspense rolling...

Recently I have decided that I need to do more original things. I have said this before but this time I mean it! Not that I don't love making my own versions and interpretations of already existing stuff... but I really want be able to make stuff that I can truly call my own. Maybe turn these designs into t-shirts, toys, stickers, etc. that 100% belong to me. So I have come up with a series of new characters that I will be posting every chance I get (or I should say, at least every time I make one!). They will all be animals doing 'people' stuff. So first up is Prehistoric Rock, because I love dinosaurs. Will You Marry Me?

This was the piece I wanted to post earlier post I waited because of the time sensitive material. I haven't spoken to Chris (the guy who commissioned me to do this) who was going to give this to his girlfriend when he asked her to marry him. But I hope things went well with that adventure! If you were wondering what it says in the giant heart shape in the background; well it says 'I love you' in a TON of different languages.

Site Redesign

So as you guys may have guessed... I am in the midst of a total site redesign. But to tell you the truth, this isn't the actual redesign I had intended for but I have been side tracked with other work so this one will have to do... for now! I'll actually post a picture of what I really want to do but don't have the time to finish up right now down below. But more to the point please let me know what you guys think about it. The look, functionality, features, etc. Please keep in mind I am not done. Some thing I am still in the process of doing is:

Updating the left navigation thumbnails to fit the look of the new site
Changing the background to a lighter design
Add more things to buy in the store and commissions section (large prints for sure!)
Probably changing the main banner image at the top (that's called a 'header' in web design talk)

But please feel free to comment or at least cast your vote at the bottom of this post (that's one of my favorite new features on the site by the way).

PS - I can't wait for Baltimore Comic-Con! Whose gonna be there? August 28th and 29th.

One Big Dump

I have been super swamped lately with multiple projects. I thought I'd just post them all at once for your viewing pleasure.

I met this really cool couple at this past Wizard World Philly and they got a commission from me. They wanted to use the drawing as their Save the Date but i told them i could do it up nice and digital like!

Next up is another Y: The Last Man commission but this time it was done traditionally. In this one I have Yorick & Ampersand fleeing the Capitol building!

This time around is a logo for a internet based company called TW Interactive Media.

Here is another logo i created a while ago for a sports bar & grill in Woodbridge, NJ. The client went with logo 'C'' which actually was my favorite of the bunch, that never happens with these types of projects! Check it out here. I actually have one more piece but I can't post it do some time sensitivity. I will post it later on when the coast is all clear.

Retro Chase Print

Yet another retro name print! This time I was asked for a 'sports' theme. It breaks my heart to have to feature baseball (I should have been born in Canada) in the large square but I have to give the people what they want! I still got my little hockey stick there in the corner!

Y: The Last Man Print

The first of 2 Y: The Last Man commissions. The only requirements were to have Yorick and Ampersand in some way, shape or form. So since Yorkick aspired to be a magician (or more of an escape artisit) I went for one of those old carnival / attraction / magician posters. I really enjoyed this comic series, well except for maybe the lackluster ending. But seriously, there's no way that the ending could've lived up to the amazing start. But I would still go check it out for those who don't know the awesomeness that was Y: The Last Man. The next one will be a traditional ink and marker one like the previous Back to the Future commission, so check back soon!

Capt. Frank Ramsey from Crimson Tide

I enjoy this movie, you? This piece will be in an upcoming sketch contest over at Cave Drawing Ink. It's Gene Hackman's character from the movie Crimson Tide, Captain Frank Ramsey. The theme is in the spirit of the 4th of July; Good Guys Gone Bad. So on the 4th, head over there and vote for me and Shut the f$@k up!

Updated Half Baked Cartoon

I really love this movie. I find it gets funnier with age. Tonight I am going to go see Jim Breuer perform live at the Stress Factory in New Brunswick, NJ. Typically at the end of each show there is a meet & greet with the performers. So after the show is over I plan on giving him the piece signed and framed. I will update when and if I meet him with some pictures. On a side note... the reason I drew this scene is because Jim has said that during the making of this movie this was the only scene in which he was actually high for filming. I can never look at this scene in the same way again. Plus it's friggin' hilarious!

Jim was HILARIOUS! Not that I thought he wouldn't be. And even though he really didn't have anytime to stop and chat with fans because A) his set was really long B) he was actually hanging out with his family after the set and C) he had another show directly after the first set. But he still managed to take a couple of pics and sign some autographs. He was really gracious and appreciative of the Half Baked print i made for him! He loved it and said he would check out my website. And here's the really crappy picture we took with my crappy cell phone camera (my regular camera was dead and i didn't realize it until i was at the club... doh!)

Pulp Fiction Cartoon

I know I said I was gonna wait a little bit to show my piece (hehe, show my piece) for the upcoming Crazy 4 Cult show in LA at Gallery 1988 but I just can't contain myself. Well, that and a bunch of other artist's have started putting theirs up on the ol' interwebs too. So as you can tell I choose the movie Pulp Fiction as my topic. It is titled Pulp Fiction: Collect the Whole Set. I really love the movie and I wanted to really show many of the different scenes & characters so I had to think of a way do that and voila! Since the movie is Pulp Fiction I wanted to use some kind of a 'pulp like' medium to display that. So I thought of those old cheesy movie trading cards and thought this would be a pretty cool idea. I originally wanted to have the background actually be Marsellus Wallace's open briefcase. And the cards would be the 'glowing contents' but when I drew that out you couldn't really tell that is was a briefcase in the background so I just wimped out and made it a generic old wood counter top. I guess I failed as an artist, but I'm still really happy with the way it came out, so poo on you! This piece will be on display (and on sale) at Gallery 1988 when the show opens Friday, July 9th at the Los Angeles location only. This 1 of a kind print is a 12" x 12" stretch canvas print signed my yours truly for only $75 beans or some not as cool printed on not as futuristic heavy weight paper for a price that is not yet determined. Crazy 4 Cult 4: The Case of the Redundant Number

Every year for the past 3 year, this totally awesome place called Gallery 1988 has a show; showcasing movies of cult classic status. And this year they actually asked me to do something for the show! Well some of you know what I'm doing and some of you don't. Well out of respect to the gallery,i will be keeping that piece a secret for now or at least until the show opens on Friday, July 9th in Los Angeles. So if you happen to be in LA that night go check out the show (which will be running from July 9th - 30th). The opening reception will be hosted by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier. And not to under sell it but these shows are SICK. They have some of the best artists from around the country (globe?). I mean, just check out the flyer alone for the show, awesome! My piece along with 99 others will be on display and on sale at the show and I'm sure other way cool stuff also! Weekend Update with Ian...

About 2 weekends ago I was at Wizard World Philly and it was amazing. Thank you to everyone who came down and for contributing to my most successful show to date! I really appreciate everyone's support! Below are some pics from the show; some commissions, Kim and I in a real Back to the Future DeLorean, and a picture with me and Ernie Hudson! A friend of mine got a Ghostbusters commission / print from me and brought Ernie a copy of it. Ernie loved the print so much that he wanted to meet the person who made it so i ran over to his booth and talked with him a bit, shook hands and took a picture together! He was such an amazingly cool and down to earth guy. So appreciative of his fans and their enthusiasm!
